Reality check – Spam is going up

In January we reported about the sudden increase in spam after a very quiet Christmas New year period. The Christmas lull followed a sustained decrease over the last few months of 2010 leading some to speculate about the future of spam and having “won the war”.

Having watched the trends since the upward spike of early January we can confirm that spam levels are up – and increasing. The average daily spam sent in for February was nearly 165 billion spam emails per day. This is more than October 2010 (162 billion per day). A look at the graph clearly shows the upward trend.

The majority of the spam observed by our labs, is from the Pharmacy Express chain. The quiet period seems to have been related to shifting powers within the world of spam pharmacies. With these netherworld issues seemingly resolved, “Business” is returning to normal.
