DataExpress: acquisition by Data443 brings benefits to customers

The world of IT is always changing and acquisitions are a fact of business life today. Whether it’s a traditional merger of equals or simply an opportunity to leverage skills or products otherwise absent from an existing portfolio, there is no escaping the constantly evolving technology landscape. This has been the major event of the year for DataExpress with it being acquired by LandStar, Inc., the parent company of Data443 Risk Mitigation, Inc.

Security – even as demands evolve, DataExpress meets the challenges that arise!

Security affects all vendors in many ways and it is perhaps the most talked about priority amongst the biggest enterprises on the planet. It’s good to know how serious these enterprises are treating security in its many guises – privacy, protection, compliance, integrity, etc. – and that the exchanges between enterprises and vendors represent an never-ending loop of requirements creation and product development. However, there are times when the need to keep secret how a vendor’s product has been deployed and put to use not only hides specifics from that vendor but also can marginalize the effectiveness of requirements exchanges where information provided may not fully qualify the opportunity.

NONSTOP – KEEPING OUR DATA SAFE!

Those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere are living through the dog days of summer fully aware that fall is just around the corner. Indeed, the further north you travel, the more inclined you will be to look for the initial sighting of fall colors, as the leaves begin to turn. With the coming of fall, there are two major events for the NonStop community – the NonStop Partner Symposium for the NonStop vendor community, followed by the NonStop Technical Boot Camp (TBC) that is open to every member of the NonStop community. As an indication what a theme will be at these events look at the many recent publications of the hacks of enterprise data centers! The theme is clearly going to include many discussions and presentations on the topic of security.

FOR NONSTOP COMMUNITY, DATAEXPRESS SUPPORT OF OPEN PLATFORMS OPENS DOORS TO GREATER INTEGRATION IN HYBRID IT

Coming as soon as it did after HPE Discover 2019, the N2TUG RUG event in Grapevine, Texas, gave the NonStop community the opportunity to hear first-hand about recent announcements made by HPE. Numerous presenters at N2TUG had attended HPE Discover 2019 and some of the feedback not only has some scratching their heads, as we recently suggested, but also has them rethinking their product portfolios. Could the news coming from HPE that is focused on Hybrid IT come to fruition, does this open the doors to greater opportunities for them?

CLOUDLESS SKIES ARE BEING PREDICTED, BUT FOR DATAEXPRESS IT DOESN’T MATTER – FILES STILL NEED TO BE MOVED!

There was a lot of information provided at this year’s HPE Discover event. While the event wrapped up some time ago, for the NonStop vendor community there were numerous topics that aroused our interest and of course, as best as we can determine at this time, there were some interesting developments for the NonStop community as the HPE team unveiled a working NonStop system running at the edge on an Edgeline 4000. Whether this demo develops into a product line or not remains to be seen, but initial feedback suggests any go to market plan of HPE will see such a product addressing markets left mostly underserved.

Airports, plane rides and schedules – it does remind NonStop users of the need for DataExpress to move files

For many members of the NonStop community the biggest event of the year to date just wrapped up in Edinburgh, Scotland. This year’s European Technical Boot Camp (ETBC), hosted by BITUG, attracted attendees from all across Europe and from the news we have received, there were more than 230 participants. Always encouraging news as there are occasions when the thought of travelling half way around the world isn’t as exciting as it once was – how many of us truly look forward to heading to the airport for that quick trip to somewhere far away?

THE DANGERS OF SHADOW IT

With the focus on security one would think that Shadow IT would be an easy target to eliminate as a threat to the organization, and yet according to a recent industry study the average enterprise is unwittingly exposed to thousands of shadow IT ‘instances’.

HYBRIDS, HIGHWAYS AND JUST GETTING THERE…

It would be hard to ignore just how much attention hybrid cars continue to get whenever there is a car show. At the most recent car show that was held in New York City, it was Toyota’s turn to unveil yet more hybrid cars – this time, attention was being directed to hybrid versions of its venerable Toyota Highlander that is being updated with “smart hybrid tech” joining announcements from other vendors, including Ford with a reference to hybrids for both the Lincoln Aviator and the Ford Escape and Porsche with its updated plug-in Panamera hybrid. While all electric cars still gain a lot of media attention, when it comes to America, many families prefer the hybrid with its backup combustion engine.

DATAEXPRESS – YOUR PARTNER IN SECURE FILE DISTRIBUTION!

“In former times, it was routinely suggested by software vendors that sales may land the initial deal but it is the support team that keeps the deal going and will lead to growth from within. Perhaps a little too glib but it does highlight a basic truth. Whenever successful software vendors sell a product or solution, a bond or partnership quickly forms between the team of users and the vendor. Whether it’s a simple phone inquiry or a request for a full roadmap disclosure, the relationship that develops over time becomes more a partnership than anything close to the adversarial role that permeated much of IT when computing first appeared as a tool for business. Today, these partnerships can be seen at work whenever there are gatherings of the NonStop community at Regional User Group (RUG) meetings or at HPE sponsored big tent events like HPE Discover and the NonStop Technical Boot Camp (TBC).”

DATAEXPRESS – YOUR DATA IS BEING SERVED!

All too often it becomes easy to assume data is where you need it and that our commitment to others to provide them with the files they require has been completed as scheduled, on time, with no loss of integrity. And yet, just as often, something in the environment has changed and those long-serving scripts begin to fail – you only find this out when your customer calls you and wants to know where their data is. As the world of IT talks incessantly about data the need to be certain your data is moved to where it’s supposed to be is not only a service to your business partners and clients, but is a reminder that in today’s highly automated world there are still tasks that mandate some level of intervention and where our dependence on scripts and the talents of individuals can leave us terribly exposed.

DATAEXPRESS – WHEN IT COMES TO 2019 PRIORITIES, SHOULD WE STILL BE WRITING SCRIPTS TO MOVE FILES?

These are the best of times and well, yes, these are the best of times. From the insights we are gaining here at DataExpress, contrary to this popular saying, there really aren’t any bad times ahead. Of course, we are interested in seeing HPE sell more NonStop systems, an observation which we are sure is shared by other members of the NonStop vendor community. Looking back on all that transpired in 2018 we can see that HPE has done a solid job of equipping all those parties working with NonStop with all the tools that will be needed to succeed with NonStop, but it still begs the question – will HPE sales teams grab the ball and run with it and have focus on NonStop in any meaningful way?

DATAEXPRESS TAKES A GOOD LOOK AT NONSTOP TODAY AND CONTEMPLATES ITS PRODUCTS’ ROADMAPS MILESTONES FOR 2019 …

When you look back at all that took place in 2018 the topic that continues to dominate conversations is transformation. While we are cognizant of the central role transformation plays in HPE’s messaging to CIOs, what is now on offer from HPE that carries the NonStop badge is vastly different to what once anchored NonStop – you want traditional NonStop then you have the NonStop X family of systems; you want an off-the-shelf virtualized NonStop product then you have the NS2; you want to take control over your choice of hardware then you can license vNS. Options about that are all driven by the L-Series operating system.

NONSTOP TECHNICAL BOOT CAMP DELIVERS; MORE GOOD NEWS FOR DATAEXPRESS AND NONSTOP

It seems only a short time ago when the NonStop community gathered together in Burlingame, California, for the annual event. While it may be called a Technical Boot Camp (TBC), for most attendees it begins to look more and more like ITUG Summit of former years. Even as the number of participants continues to grow with each year, there is still some way to go to match those former times where the global reach of NonStop was evident, but it is still a major drawcard for all parties interested in all things NonStop.

DATAEXPRESS PROVIDES NONSTOP CUSTOMERS WITH RELIABILITY AND STABILITY FOR SECURE MANAGED FILE TRANSFERS

There is really no such thing as a typical NonStop vendor, just as there really isn’t all that much overlap in products’ functionality. However, it is these different product offerings opening up the options available to NonStop users as broad and as rich as they are today. Walk around the tables or through the booths of participating vendors at NonStop events anywhere in the world and while the banners and other signage may remain somewhat familiar there is much that is happening just out of sight. Work is always going on to ensure even the most familiar sounding products continue

MIGRATION? WE MAY NOT LIKE THEM, BUT WE ALL DO THEM!

Migrations from one system to another are just like relocating from one city to another. No matter our circumstances, we all have aversions to moving house and yet, for IT professionals, it happens a lot but when we are faced with a system upgrade that can only be described as a migration, while we may not suffer the same aversion (there’s always some excitement about getting a new, faster, bigger, computer) we are often left wondering, “now what?” Point is, no sooner have we completed one migration and settled back into the routine of processing transactions than the work begins on the next migration.

CONVERGENCE? WITH DATA AT THE CENTER, THERE ARE NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR DATAEXPRESS

It was an observation made by other individuals presenting at this year’s Regional User Group (RUG) events that caught our attention and set in motion some thinking by those close to DataExpress that perhaps, after all, the references to virtualized NonStop workloads signified more than just a change to NonStop. The comments about everything happily running on a stack of x86 servers somewhere with all the prerequisite components deployed to allow the provisioning of virtualized NonStop (vNS) almost at will, as the need dictates, coexisting as it may with any other workload capable of running atop x86, that illustrated for us just how far convergence has come of late. And by convergence, here at DataExpress we mean how single-architecture systems, racked and stacked ad infinitum, can play host to anything that we care to run – a far cry from when we lived in a world of best-of-breed, silo-ed servers!

EVENTS BY HPE FOR INDUSTRY AND PARTNERS BETTER ILLUMINATE PATH AHEAD FOR NONSTOP

As reported in our last post, N2TUG proved to be a powerful reminder that the NonStop community is very much alive and well. To this we can add that HPE is committed to NonStop and that the NonStop team is progressing down a path that will open more doors to NonStop deployments. N2TUG brought us all a reminder of how Tandem Computers developed as large a community of users as it did with a presentation by former Tandem Computers Founder and CEO, Jimmy Treybig, but forty plus years later, it is the management team in place today at HPE that is doing the heavy lifting to ensure a resurgence in the success of NonStop. These past couple of weeks have seen additional events sponsored by HPE that have added substance to what was laid out for the community in a series of NonStop hardware and software roadmaps.

N2TUG DELIVERS UPDATES ON DATAEXPRESS FOR THE NONSTOP COMMUNITY

N2TUG proved to be a powerful reminder that the NonStop community is very much alive and well. With one hundred members of the NonStop community present for this Regional User Group (RUG) event every session was well attended. There were times when even the most hardened road-weary salesperson was alert and taking notes. The theme of this RUG event was “Protecting with Blockchain” and for the morning sessions this message was reinforced with presentations by HPE, its partner R3 and NonStop vendors openly talking of their own development activities involving blockchain / mission critical distributed ledger technology (MCDLT).

DATAEXPRESS – RIDING THE WRECKING BALL TO EMBRACE THE AGE OF AWARENESS!

It’s hard to ignore the changes underway within enterprise data centers. Perhaps it is still slideware for the most part or simply enthusiastic data center managers promoting their longer term plans, but it seems as though every enterprise is fully absorbed in major re-dos of their IT deployment. While the enterprise is focused on business issues and is leaving it to the pros to guide them through the changes, no IT professional is sure where these changes are leading them, but overall, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for IT visionaries is in reality a pot of gold for the enterprise.

DATAEXPRESS – THE HETEROGENEOUS AND HYBRID WORLDS ARE DRIVING CHANGES THAT ARE AT THE VERY HEART OF DATAEXPRESS

When there are so many discussions on the topic of change and pivot points and yes, disruptive technologies, it is good to hear that among developers there are still regular, routine tasks that need to be pursued. Whether it is accommodating a new communications protocol, a different message format, a revised user interface or adding additional layers of security, there is always “the next release” demanding the dedicated attention of the developer.
